Something Wicked This Way Comes

I thought that with the beta started, while Cataclysm is still undoubtedly some time away, it would make sense to start to get an idea of what sort of guild roster we will be looking at. I should start, I suppose, by laying out a few basic pieces of information. This information is in beta at the moment, and is subject to future change, so please take these announcements with a pinch of salt.

1: I cannot promise anybody a spot in the new guild with certainty. While ties of friendship are very important to me, they are not primarily what a raiding guild is about, and after finding how crippled by our raid composition we were before, we will be trying to maximise our efficiency. In the interests of this, we are likely to have a roster slightly larger than 10. It is our intention that everybody be slowly cycled in and out of the raid where possible, and nobody should have to miss more than one or two raids a month.

2: No free rides. While we want the atmosphere to be friendly and fun, we take our raids seriously. Failure to research optimal gear, specs, enchants, gems and strategies may result in disciplinary action. We want to have fun while we raid, but it would be nice if a large portion of the fun came from success.

3: Activity. A small community can not survive when its members only log on for raids. We want to have players who actually enjoy playing, especially in co-operation with each other. Guild members should go out of their way to help each other to further the goals of the guild. This will not be enforced, but if you aren’t interested in helping your guild mates outside raid time, this will not be the place for you.

4: Commitment. While it will not be as tight as it has been in the past, we will nonetheless be expecting as close as possible to 100% attendance. Everybody is allowed to have a life, but please as much as possible try to keep your social-life to non-raid days, of which there are plenty. Most importantly, we will expect our raiders to commit both of their specs to PvE play. If we have learned anything, it is that a 10-man raid needs to be as flexible as possible to be in a position to deal with everything it has to face.

5: New leadership. At the launch of Cataclysm, I will be standing down from the position of guild master, and we will be flying under a new flag. What the new guild name will be is as yet undecided, but we want our memories of Three to remain with those who were with us through this expansion, and forge a new name for ourselves in Cataclysm. We can build on our experiences from Wrath of the Lich King to make the guild run more smoothly, more effectively, and more successfully.

I think that’s all that I have to say for now, so I will conclude by asking those of you who will be interested in being a part of the next chapter of our history to sign this post with the classes/specs you would be willing to play in Cataclysm. Needless to say, please only put classes you are willing to pursue long term as your main.

One Journey Ends, Another Begins

Two weeks ago, we had our last official raid together as Three. It’s been a long journey, with a lot of fun had along the way. I’ve got a lot of great memories, especially from Ulduar, and later on, the race to complete all 3.2 raiding achievements. Unfortunately, there comes a time everyone has to move on. That time has not yet come for me, but it has for many of our raiding core, and I wish them well in whatever they choose to do with their new-found spare time.

It’s a shame we never quite made it to the finish line of downing ICC hardmodes, but given the inflexibility of our line-up and our refusal to put progress before friends, we found ourselves simply unable to progress any further with our melee setup. Frankly, while disappointed, I find I’m not that upset. We decided it was better to simply call it a day for WotLK than to recruit replacements and attempt to raid without the soul of our guild. I would say the guild was a success. We raided 10-mans, we completed almost all 10-man content and achievements, and for the most part (le sigh @ ICC) enjoyed doing it. With 10-mans growing in significance in Cataclysm, I look forward to exploring the new content with new friends in a new, larger 10-man community. Chances are it won’t be under this guild banner, but we will most certainly be back to compete for Deathwing. I like to think we’ve been a part of spreading the gospel of what fun 10-man raiding with your friends can be, and look forward to doing it more in the future.

Our last raid was the most fun we’ve had in months, and I think it was such a huge success because of that. We came in with RhysFM playing over Ventrilo, oneshotted Sindragosa (Worst. Kill. Ever. Resto shaman dps to bring her down the last % ftw!) but everyone just found it fun. We then went on to oneshot Arthas, giving our guests Dwalin and Taurionn some very very richly deserved titles. Following this, after a little debate what to do with our remaining hour, we settled on getting our beloved Okislayer a richly deserved Tribute to Insanity mount, as he’s been patiently passing it since the dawn of time, and despite a close call or two, we comfortably managed to get it for him, also scoring Taurionn and Dwalin the Tribute to Insanity achievement. We take care of our guests, amirite?! As one last fun(?) event, we went off to slay Onyxia, something I think all of us have been doing since back in 2005 (and apparently will now be doing in Cataclysm?). We made phase 3 that little bit more interesting by kiting her round in a circle cleaving everyone (well ok just repeatedly killing Taurionn yay Rebirth!). This done, we decided it was time to say our goodbyes. Naturally I intend to stay in touch with those who left, but it still felt like the end of an era…because it was.

It just remains for me to give a huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of Three at some point during the last year and a half, I’ve had a great time, and I hope I can enjoy myself as much in Cataclysm.

/salute

Since we forgot on previous occasions, here’s a screenshot from our last LK kill.

The Lich King was broken.

Back from the very heights of darkness, teetering on the edge of insanity, our fatigued heroes venture homewards at long last, eager to put the bitterness of war behind them once more.

They deserve time to regain their former strength; to savour the fruits of the world that they have once again defended from harm; to remember just what it is that they’ve been fighting to protect all along.

But alas, evil does not rest…

The future of Strict?

  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids will share the same lockout.
  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids difficulty will be as close as possible to each other.
  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids will drop the exact same loot, but 25-man will drop a higher quantity of items.
  • Normal versus Heroic mode will be chosen on a per-boss basis in Cataclysm raids, the same way it works in Icecrown Citadel.
  • For the first few raid tiers, our plan is to provide multiple smaller raids. Instead of one raid with eleven bosses, you might have a five-boss raid as well as a six-boss raid.

So, I kinda’ read that as ‘Strict is dead’, but I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

There will literally exist 10 man guilds and 25 man guilds, and they’ll just be the same, except for the size of the raids. But 25 man guilds will field a 10 man squad with alts or maybe other players (25 man guilds recruiting ex-Strict folk maybe?) and compete with the exclusively 10 man guilds anyway, and there’ll be no way to distinguish between them. Casual and hardcore all piled back in the same league, basically.

But the people I really feel sorry for are the achievement whores, who can only choose 10 or 25 man achievements if their guild is aligned to one or the other. I suppose Blizzard may just consolidate the two paths and make the achievements unique to encounter rather than raid size.

My only real concern is the alleged claim that the difficulty will be ‘as similar as possible’. Sarth 3D showed that certain ideas just don’t scale well, and encounters are going to become increasingly simplistic if they keep finding ways to limit their designers to the most rudimentary mechanics just because they have to make the encounters identical when scaled up or down. I wouldn’t say that todays encounters are ‘as similar as possible’. I guess what will really end up happening is that classes will become more homogenized to serve this new goal.

Regardless, the age old debate of which is harder will continue unabashed, whilst we lose bragging rights for doing things the hard way, as no hard way will exist. And a whole bunch of 25 man guilds will probably quit.

Oh, and the happy fun ‘now you can wait a month before doing the next wing!!!’ gating is going to make a triumphant return. Yay.

Coming soon to BBC2 - Strictly Raiding!

We are proud to announce that we have been selected to feature one of our members on BBC2’s brand new television show: Strictly Raiding!

This exciting show follows the exploits of a group of pre-selected raiders from different guilds across europe, as they attempt to top the tps, dps and hps meters during a varied selection of encounters in the 10-man strict scene. Although teamwork is essential to completing the encounters themselves, participants can also seek to distract one-another or disrupt their internet network connections, amongst many other exciting tactics designed to improve your own meter scores by the end of the battle!

Those with the highest score in each category will then have to answer general knowledge questions about World of Warcraft to determine which of them gains the ability to choose the next raiding encounter and, to top it off, they also get to choose which classes their opposing team-mates have to play as! Identifying the weaknesses of the other raiders, whilst also getting the job done will surely make for fun viewing!

This thrilling blend of teamwork and competitiveness is sure to be a winning formula, and we are in the process of selecting our most competent member to feature on the very first show! If you have any idea who might make the best contestant, let us know!

A time for change - Four is born!

We’ve been raiding under the banner of ‘Three’ for a great deal of time, and quite frankly, we’re sick of it. We’re 100% sure that this really silly name is a detriment to our raiding prowess, and whilst many wish we’d had the foresight to conjure up some fancy latin title for ourselves, we’re going to go one step further!

Oh yes.

Due to radical changes to our raiding structure, incoming shortly, we’ve established that it is indeed time to move on. After many late night meetings between officers this past month, we’ve finally set our hearts and our dreams of future prosperity on <drum roll>….

FOUR.

This new guild name will finally solve all our problems. Under this new banner we will be reborn afresh, with supreme new leadership and a revolutionary guild structure that will change the way that all guilds function forever. And then some.

New leadership, you say?! Joe has done a fantastic job thus far, this I cannot deny, but our new stance requires even stronger leadership than ever before. And so I present to you our new guild master, the truly magnificent Jimbo! Okay, so yes, he hasn’t actually raided before, and yes, he has never actually played World of Warcraft, and granted, he has never actually played a computer game of any kind- and also the small matter of not actually having been born yet- but these are minor concerns! Clearly, Jimbo is the rightful heir to this grand new endeavour. And there is more.

MORE.

No longer will we suffer from composition problems. No longer will we hit a brick wall whenever an anti-melee encounter rears its ugly head. Under the new ideals of Four, every raiding member will be expected to purchase an extra subscription of World of Warcraft, something I’m sure they have no qualms with for THE GUILD IS EVERYTHING. They will also be required to run two computers side-by-side and- here comes the truly novel part- each member will raid with 2 characters at the SAME TIME. Pro’s, all of them. It’ll be no problem for our expert raiding crew.

One raid will be melee-heavy, the other ranged-heavy. As one raid encounters difficulties, the other shines. Every depressing wipefest will be immediately offset by pure awesomeness on the other screen. It’s the only solution that makes any sense. This, right here, is the future of raiding. And it all began here, with Four. Thanks for reading,

- Lee (Ethos), Officer of Four
Not just a number, but a way of life.

P.S. Just a reminder to current raiding members that we’re meeting at the top of Aerie Peak on Sunday to continue the gruelling ‘Explore the Hinterlands’ achievement. Don’t forget, no 25-man gear allowed.

Jimbo’s birthday?!

Hey all,

For starters, I have to say this is Bart’s idea from the beginning. I just took a liking to it and decided to make this post.

As you all know, I’m pregnant. What you also know, is that we’ll be getting a boy. Bart’s idea was to setup a poll on his birth day and what the name will be. I think he suggested putting some wow-gold on a name and a date, to get some more fun out of it.

I’ll give some additional information. According to the ultra sound we had done in The Netherlands, we’re expecting the 12th of June. According to the ultra sound in Sweden, it’s the 11th of June. As you already know, we’re having a boy and to give one last hint, his name will not be Jimbo (sorry to disappoint you Lee!).

Let the betting begin!

Icecrown Citadel: No King Rules Forever…

Well. Arthas. Long time coming, and I don’t know how the rest of the guys felt about it but personally, I wasn’t disappointed, thought it was a great fight. We scored our second kill on Sunday, so I thought it was probably time to talk about the process.

The Lich King prep [Phase 3]

Hi guis. Lets do this, k?

This movie from Deus Vox demonstrates how a single tank can handle all vile spirits whilst the LK is kited between edges. The spirits spawn at his current location and hover there for a duration before sinking to ground level and persuing random targets. They do, however, have threat tables (and are also stunnable) - and will explode when coming into proximity with the tank that lies between them and the raid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKAT4kw59pU

“Lawl, FU melee.” - The Lich King

No one ever understands my diagrams! Is k, I adapt.

Sindragosa prep [Additional - Phase 3]

Ok, Phase 3 is pretty challenging. Let’s try and look at this in a more structured manner:

A. Ideal position to run to when you recieve a Frost Beacon. This strategy does not support multiple ice tombs, and thus the drop-off zone will always be the same. This makes it easier for teams (see below) to reach the tomb quickly regardless of role. Frost Beacons are applied every 15 seconds, so teams need to be quick to hide behind the tomb and subsequently kill it when its their turn.
The current OT should be behind the ice tomb, dropping any stacks of Mystic Buffet, moving into position and then taunting before the next Frost Beacon will be applied in order to reduce the chance that they will be selected as a target. This does not stop the newly-OT from being ice tombed, but they can hide behind the next ice tomb (after they are released), drop stacks and resume MT asap. (I have no idea what happens to mystic buffet stacks whilst entombed tbh, if they are dropped during the ice tomb, that would be funky)

B. Ice tombs can easily block los for healers focusing on the MT. This is bad!

C. Blistering Cold basically exists to fuck over any attempts to create a nice tidy rotation of teams ditching their stacks. That would be asking too much, k. If a tomb is up during Blistering Cold, the best way to handle it would be to have everyone run to ranged camp, then everyone except an MT healer (probably with the lowest stacks, and defo no Unchained) moving behind the ice tomb to remove stacks - then nuking the tomb before the next Beacon.

D. Ok, worst case scenario: 1 healer entombed, 1 healer Unchained. The Unchained healer should probably move behind the ice tomb to clear their stacks and perhaps help with raid healing (as much as they dare), since you can make no assumptions about what healer might be entombed and how many stacks they might be on at that time. The other healer must solo heal the MT and will thus be exposed to potentially high stacks (perhaps themself needing healing from the Unchained healer), so you’ll need someone with no stacks ready to swap them out afterwards. It may be an idea to abandon dps team rotation during this scenario and have everyone move behind and nuke asap.

Notes

  • It is unwise to let Unchained or Chilled to the Bone stack above 3-4 during phase 3.
  • Tombs occur every 15 seconds, Mystical Buffet stacks every 5 seconds.
  • Unchained Magic targets 1 healer and 1 offensive caster each time. I’m not sure what will happen if the raid has no offensive casters, though. Targetting 2 healers each time instead would be rather brutal.
  • It is allegedly only Sindragosa’s head area that eminates the Mystical Buffet, bear this in mind when attempting to los.
  • It is potentially possible to position the ice tomb so that healers can heal the MT from behind it without incuring further stacks of Mystic Buffet. However, in practice, and in the heat of the moment, odds are that it will rarely be so perfectly positioned, and I don’t think we should rely on it.
  • Backlash has recently been patched, and will no longer crit. Consider that a nerf if you so will.

Team rotations

Splitting the raid down the middle and rotating ice blocks per team isn’t really plausible. It seems wiser to rotate teams from each role individually. As shown above (see A), the tanks operate on their own rotation, completely independent from everyone else.
Since we run with 5 dps here, we can split them into two teams of three dps/two dps. Team one hides behind and dps’s the first block, team two do the same to the second block and this pattern continues throughout (until Blistering Cold says hi, and if executed as per C, would effectively reset the rotation pattern)
We have 3 healers here, and things are a little more complicated in their case. I can’t seem to find a pattern for Unchained Magic, sometimes it seems to be as often as 30 second intervals, sometimes way over a minute. If anyone knows the specifics, that’d be cute.
However, what I suggest is rotating out one healer each tomb, preferably the one with the highest stacks (which may need some coordinating at some point, but otherwise could be basically rotational), then deviating from this pattern when a healer recieves Unchained Magic, swapping that healer out asap, and adjusting the rotation accordingly. In the case of D, above, its obvious who will be staying out, and the current MT should probably pop CD’s.

Just to re-iterate, Unchained and Chilled to the Bone should not be allowed to go as high as you might risk during phase 1/2. Yes, there is a hard enrage at 10 minutes, but getting through phase 3 (in 10-man at least) is largely attributed to how well the raid can conquer RNG, adapt without breaking a sweat, then tell the demented RNG in question to go fuck itself. Hf.
